Book Review: Cult Status

My latest book read that I have finished is the book Cult Status by Tim Duggan.

I had tried to read it sometime last year but got overwhelmed and had a few life things going on so couldn’t finish it, so started again in June this year.

I have to say this book features some great tips for someone who is about to start a business or a brand, or is not sure what their first steps should be for defining what they want their brand or image to look like.

For myself I didn’t find it as helpful or insightful as I thought it would, but that’s not because it isn’t well written, but more of a reflection on where I am in my journey after all my trials and errors, I found I had already learned much of what was in the book. It was however reassuring to read it from the point of view from having already learned many of the lessons presented in the book, sometimes reassurance of a lesson and your perspective and experience from someone else, especially someone with more experience - is just as helpful as learning something for the first time.

That being said there were a few chapters that I found helpful about how other business owners handled challenges or were able to build momentum in gathering dedicated customers and ‘cult followers’ and this I will be taking away with me to tweak things for my rebrand and factor into my launch for later in the year.

I would rate this book as an entry level book for someone just starting out in business or looking to start their own business, but probably not too helpful for someone who has gone well into their journey and the momentum of operating their business. I would recommend it though if you are looking into doing a rebrand, which is the position I am at currently.

The things I did particularly like in this book where;

  • The best way to build and promote your business is to involve yourself and your story and journey.

  • How to note down the touchpoints of the customer journey and their importance.

  • How you need to build a central point of return and connection for your customers and you to meet at in your brand and business - also known as your business altar.

  • How it is important to figure out what you are NOT just as much as it is important to figure out what your business is.

  • How there is more than one leadership style and no final correct way, it all depends on your business and customer needs.

  • How to create an impact statement with purpose.

  • The importance of self care in business, especially for those who are entrepreneurs - this book does not shy away from the gritty statistics on the impact having a startup does to your mental and physical well being.

  • The idea that ‘The size of your market doesn’t matter, but the passion of your followers does. You don’t need to be bigger than everyone else, just better. ‘
